In the summer of 2021, we held a two-week intensive distance learning introduction to practical conservation (DIP-C2021). This program was organized and facilitated by Professor Nina Owczarek, University of Delaware, Dr. Caryl McFarlane, and Dr. Jontyle Robinson of Tuskegee University. In addition, Julianna Ly, Assistant Conservator of Paintings, at the Cleveland Museum of Art, joined the team as an Assistant instructor. Professor Michele Marincola, and Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professors of Conservation and incoming Chair of the Conservation Center at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, also contributed.
Introducing students to conservation as a profession along with its ethical principles was our primary aim. Both the 2020 and 2021 programs were conducted via distance learning due to the pandemic. In both programs, we focused on developing an understanding of the broad preventive concepts and developing students’ critical thinking related to conservation issues. Through readings (assigned and optional), we introduced students to and helped them develop their understanding of conservation literature and resources. A practical component also showed students how to apply their hand skills to an artifact as a means for helping to prepare students for introductory conservation internships. The 2021 program was centered around the theme Mitigating Natural and Man-Made Disasters and Mistakes: Emergency-Response, Equity, Efficiency, Efficacy, Excellence as imagined by Dr. Jontyle Robinson.
