Fellowship in Collaborative Conservation

The Midwest Art Conservation Center (MACC) is pleased to offer a Fellowship in Collaborative Conservation. This is a 12-week position (60 workdays) with a stipend of $14,000. MACC is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and a partially remote schedule can be discussed. The Fellowship will be offered to a candidate demonstrating strong ties to a Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC) community or collection as part of MACC’s Mellon-funded Collaborative Conservation Initiative. The Fellowship will take place in the summer of 2023, but start and end dates are flexible.

The Fellow will work with MACC’s Preventive Conservation department and the George Floyd Global Memorial on a variety of collections care activities including art handling, general collections assessment, conservation documentation, collection database use, and technical research and writing. The Fellow will gain first-hand experience of art conservation evaluation techniques and approaches through participation in preservation work at the George Floyd Global Memorial and other collecting institutions in the region. The Fellow will work jointly at the MACC labs and the George Floyd Global Memorial, where they will have the opportunity to work closely with the staff and volunteers. The goals of the program include advancing the skills of an individual for an on-going or potential career in collections stewardship, supporting the preservation work at the George Floyd Global Memorial, and strengthening MACC’s Collaborative Conservation capacity.

A successful applicant will demonstrate both an interest in racial justice history and an interest in a career in collections stewardship. Candidates with a college degree completed or in-progress are particularly encouraged.

MACC is a nonprofit center for art conservation based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. MACC provides comprehensive art conservation services in Paintings, Objects, Paper, Textiles, and Preventive Conservation. The staff is collaborative, collegial, and works innovatively with the curatorial professionals and collection caretakers at hundreds of non-profit collections including fine art museums, historical societies, universities, Native cultural centers, city governments, libraries, and archives. MACC is located within the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
