Six-Week Introduction To Practical Conservation (SIP-C) 2022

The six-week Introduction to Practical Conservation (SIP-C) in 2022 was a program organized and facilitated by Professor Nina Owczarek of the Department of Art Conservation, University of Delaware (UD), Dr. Jontyle Robinson of Tuskegee University and the Alliance of HBCU Museums and Galleries, Dr. Joyce Hill Stoner of the Department of Art Conservation at UD, and Professor Michele Marincola of the Conservation Center, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University (NYU). Morrigan Kelley, a 2022 graduate of the UD undergraduate Art Conservation Program, served as the teaching assistant.

Following a one-week introduction for all four students at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, two students were hosted at the Brooklyn Museum, and two students were hosted at Winterthur for the remaining five weeks. During these five weeks, the students gathered in New York for one long weekend to visit local conservation labs and local institutions with additional programming at NYU’s Conservation Center. The program concluded with all four students presenting their summer work and research at Winterthur on the last day.

The program introduced students to the profession of art conservation. Its ethical tenets, methodologies and goals, and offered a deeper conservation experience.
